Made mostly from a single 1-by-12 pine board, almost all of the project's pieces are traced from full-size patterns. Construction is simple. First, trace the pieces onto wood, cut everything out and sand. Next, assemble the cradle box and base section separately, using glue and wood screws. Small, light and sturdy, this do-it-yourself cradle project is an early-American classic. Featuring rounded edges and corners, handholds that make it easy to move around and a hood to keep drafts and glare out, the cradle rocks freely with the touch of a toe, but the recurved rockers make it almost impossible to tip. It's easy to see why the design has been popular since the eighteenth century. It's also simple and inexpensive to build. As pictured, the cradle is made from pine lumber (other species will also work) plus dowels, glue and finish. There's room for a 13- by 28-inch bassinet pad inside, or a simple mattress can be made for a more custom fit. The project is built from just 14 pieces, and all of the curved cuts (including the optional designs on the hood apron and footboard) are traced from full-size patterns. The Newborn 930-GTD Drip-Free Smooth Hex Rod Cradle caulking gun has a steel half-barrel frame that fits 1/10-gal. cartridges and has a 10:1 thrust ratio for use with low viscosity materials such as latex. The smooth pressure rod requires less force and is quieter than a ratchet-style pressure rod. The rod retracts after each pull of the trigger, removing pressure from the tube to help prevent dripping. The handle and trigger are padded for comfort. There is a welded plate in the back for securing the cartridge in place. A seal puncture tool and a spout cutter are built into the side of gun for opening cartridges without a knife, and the hook on the back allows it to hang on a ladder.
