How to Measure for a Twirling Baton: Stand tall and lift one arm straight ahead, level with the floor, with the hand extended palm down. Use a tape measure or yard stick. Measure from the base of the neck where it meets the top of the shoulder, out to the tip of the middle finger. If the measurement is between full inches, choose the larger measurement. For example, if the measurement is 23 inches, size up to 24 inches for your twirling baton.
If taking baton twirling lessons or a class, it is a good idea to ask the instructor for their preference in measuring for a baton. Some people prefer to measure from underneath the arm at the arm pit, and others prefer this top of the shoulder method. It will be a difference of just 2 or 3 inches. If the twirler is a growing child, it is generally recommended to use the longer, top of the shoulder measurement.
You will get the best baton fit if you take a measurement. If unable to take a measurement, these are very rough guidelines for selecting baton lengths based on age: age 1-4: 18 inches, age 5-7: 20 inches, age 8-10: 22 inches, age 11-12: 24 inches, age 13-14: 26 inches, age 15+: 28 inches
