1. Strange Fire: The Danger of Offending the Holy Spirit with Counterfeit Worship

Feature

Nelson Books

Description

What would God say about those who blatantly misrepresent His Holy Spirit; who exchange true worship for chaotic fits of mindless ecstasy; who replace the biblical gospel with vain illusions of health and wealth; who claim to prophesy in His name yet speak errors; and who sell false hope to desperate people for millions of dollars?

The charismatic movement has always been a breeding-ground for scandal, greed, bad doctrine, and all kinds of spiritual chicanery. As a movement, it is clearly headed the wrong direction. And it is growing at an unprecedented rate.

From the Word of Faith to the New Apostolic Reformation, the Charismatic movement is being consumed by the empty promises of the prosperity gospel. Too many charismatic celebrities promote a Christianity without Christ, a Holy Spirit without holiness. And their teaching is having a disastrous influence on a grand scale, as large television networks broadcast their heresies to every part of the world.

In Strange Fire, bestselling author and pastor John MacArthur chronicles the unsavory history behind the modern Charismatic movement. He lays out a chilling case for rejecting its false prophets, speaking out against their errors, showing true reverence to the Holy Spirit, and above all clinging to the Bible as the inerrant, authoritative Word of God and the one true standard by which all truth claims must be tested.

Description

Modernism and Authority presents a provocative new take on the early paintings of Pablo Picasso and the writings of Guillaume Apollinaire Charles Palermo argues that references to theology and traditional Christian iconography in the works of Picasso and Apollinaire are not mere symbolic gestures rather they are complex responses to the symbolist art and poetry of figures important to them including Paul Gauguin Charles Morice and Santiago Rusinol The young Picasso and his contemporaries experienced the challenges of modernity as an attempt to reflect on the lost relation to authority For the symbolists art held authority by revealing something compelling-something to which audiences must respond lest they lose claim to their own moral authority Instead of the total transformation of the reader or viewer that symbolist creators envision Picasso and Apollinaire imagine a divided self responding only partially or ambivalently to the work of arts call Navigating these problems of symbolist art and poetry entails considering the nature of the work of art and of ones response to it the modern subjects place in history and the relevance of historical truth to our methodological choices in the present-Provided by publisher

4. Charismatic Chaos

Description

The charismatic movement of the past quarter-century has made an impact on the church unparalleled in history. But one legacy of the movement is confusion and mushy thinking. In Charismatic Chaos, John F. MacArthur calls for biblical evaluation and analyzes the doctrinal differences between charismatics and non-charismatics in the light of Scripture. "My principal concern," writes John MacArthur, "is to call the church to a firm commitment to the purity and authority of the Scriptures, and thereby to strengthen the unity of the true church." To tough questions that seem to divide, Charismatic Chaos provides tougher answers that strive to unite. This book tackles such questions as - Is experience a valid test of truth? - Does God still give revelation? - Prophets, fanatics, or heretics? - Does God still heal? - What should we think of the Signs and Wonders movement? - Does the Bible promise health and wealth?

5. "No Fire" or Why Cessationists Are Wrong: A Short Response to John MacArthur and the "Strange Fire" Seminar

Description

Pentecostal truth has come under fire. In NO FIRE or Why Cessationists are Wrong, author E.A. Windischman answers the criticisms of the speakers at John MacArthurs Strange Fire conference. This book clarifies the biblical teaching on spiritual gifts, and will help those seeking to understand if God is still distributing supernatural gifts today. While acknowledging abuses in the modern charismatic movement, NO FIRE exposes a more serious error, Cessationism - the teaching that the Holy Spirit's gifts have ceased. "While John MacArthur and the participants in the 'Strange Fire' seminar were well meaning and present some legitimate critiques of the charismatic movement, they err on one critical point, their cessationist doctrine. This book addresses this error" -E. A. Windischman "The author has taken great care to develop from scripture what can easily be understood and accepted as truth for todays believer. I encourage you to read this book, and read it more than once, opening your heart and mind to what is written in these pages" -Pastor James Bugg

8. Strange Fire: Reading the Bible after the Holocaust

Description

There can be little doubt that the Holocaust was an event of major consequence for the twentieth century. While there have been innumerable volumes published on the implications of the Holocaust for history, philosophy, and ethics, there has been a surprising lack of attention paid to the theoretical and practical effects of the Shoah on biblical interpretation.

Strange Fire addresses the implications of the Holocaust for interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, bringing together a diverse and distinguished range of contributors, including Richard Rubenstein, Elie Wiesel, and Walter Brueggemann, to discuss theoretical and methodological considerations emerging from the Shoah and to demonstrate the importance of these considerations in the reading of specific biblical texts. The volume addresses such issues as Jewish and Christian biblical theology after the Holocaust, the ethics of Christian appropriation of Jewish scripture, and the rethinking of biblical models of suffering and sacrifice from a post-Holocaust perspective.

The first book of its kind, Strange Fire will establish a benchmark for all future work on the topic.
