Description

On a June night in 2017, opera lovers thronged to the Royal Opera House in London to hear tenor Jonas Kaufmann, recently acclaimed by The Daily Telegraph as the world s greatest tenor, make his eagerly anticipated debut in the title role of Otello Verdi s greatest and most demanding role for tenor voice. As the New York Times wrote Mr. Kaufmann made his debut in the part, and he calmly, confidently sang it for the ages. Sony Classical is pleased to release his landmark performance on DVD and Blu-ray. Joining Jonas Kaufmann on stage were Italian baritone, Marco Vratogna as Iago, who, as the Metro newspaper noted sings up a thrilling storm of hatred and malevolence and Italian soprano, Maria Agresta who sang with a tender yet creamy intensity (The Observer) in her deeply sensitive performance of Otello s tragic Desdemona. The entire production was led by lauded conductor Antonio Pappano. Kaufmann s eagerly anticipated debut matched the high expectations of the audience and critics alike and will surely stand the test of time, his Otello being, as the City Am newspaper noted: the great Otello for this generation of opera lovers. 6. Verdi: Nabucco

Description

Verdi's third opera was created at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1842, in the epicentre of the Risorgimento and the capital of Italian nationalism, at a time where the supporters of Italian independence from Austrian occupation were starting to make their voices heard. The Chorus of the Hebrew slaves, a pivotal point in the third act where the Jews, exiled from Babylon by Nabuchodonosor, mourn their country, so beautiful and lost, immediately resonated with the Italian nationalists and has ever since been a symbol of Italian national identity. French director Arnaud Bernard goes as far as to center the entire opera during the popular uprisings of 1848 and in the insides of the Milanese opera house. A clever way to emphasize on the legends that have been building around Verdi's operas and the role they played in the political process of uniting the Italian peninsula. Soprano Susanna Branchini steals the stage as Nabuchodonosor's daughter Abigaille, while Israeli-born conductor Daniel Oren conducts with great panache this lyrical epic that holds such a special place in the heart of all Italians. As a film director, Ingmar Bergman was also a choreographer. His invisible hand is constantly directing the actor in a slow dance around the room. The renowned and innovative Swedish choreographers Alexander Ekman, Pr Isberg, Pontus Lidberg and Joakim Stephenson, with principal dancers Jenny Nilson, Nathalie Nordquist, Oscar Salomonsson and Nadja Sellrup from the Royal Swedish Ballet, interpret Ingmar Bergman through four unique dance performances reflecting on human relations and intense feelings. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Bergman's birth, this movie is not only a tribute to the Swedish cineaste's unique aesthetics, but also a way to deepen his search of the ineffable, his reflection on the visual poetry of movement, and on the emotional powers of silent contemplation. The movie won the Special Mention award at Golden Prague International Film Festival 2017 for exceptional artistic achievement.

10. Somtow Sucharitkul: DasJati - Part I: Temiya, the Silent Prince

Description

This 2-DVD set contains both the Bangkok premiere from 2012 and as a bonus an interesting Czech premiere from 2016 which has been edited together from nonprofessional tapes the latter featuring Colleen Brooks's debut in the role. Somtow Sucharitkul's sumptuous and marvellously lyrical score is enchanting, the Houston Chronicle's reviewer wrote, noting the use of traditional Indian instruments in the orchestra - tamburas, celeste and harmonium. He called the show moving and intriguing and said it always retains a deep sense of mystery and spirituality. His rich and beautiful orchestrations are masterful, meaningful and mesmerising. Sucharitkul disperses a misconception that contemporary opera is esoteric and impertinent, Joel Luks commented on the website CultureMap. In Somtow Sucharitkul's opera "The Silent Prince", which had its Bangkok premiere at the Thailand Cultural Centre on December 5 in honour of His Majesty the King, Jak Cholvijarn - not just Prince Temiya, the character he played - meditated for almost the entire length of the production. Finally, in the last astonishing five minutes, the Prince revealed himself as a bodhisattva, a man about to become a god. As in Mozart's operas, where brief silence between notes can speak as eloquently as the music, Jak's enduring quiet made for a transfixing, drawn-out prelude. Temiya withstands incessant distractions and hindrances, then turns to meditate with eyes firmly shut, the better to see the road to becoming the Buddha. Jak, a student of Buddhism, has said that meditating onstage just as surely blocks out distractions so that his soul projects only transcendent good. The power of his silence was riveting. The show's spirituality was itself a form of meditation, taking audience members to a new understanding of their role in the world. That, Jak explained, was the intention. - As Somtow said, the opera has a relatively small cast of 25 performers, but the sound has to be very big. The orchestra's nine strings tackled nine parts in a terrifyingly complex score and the result was quite natural - when not supernatural - leading us into deep reflection. Meanwhile the woodwinds offered intense colour and great beauty and the brass and percussion conjured the forces of Hell with brutish force. It was extraordinary music, played by brilliant musicians! It is rare when no fault can be found in a production, yet the virtuosity and brilliance in every component of Somtow's tribute to His Majesty allowed for no error. THE NATION
