Description

Richard Dyer-Bennet (1913-1991) played a major role in the folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s. He founded his own record label in 1955 in order to maintain artistic control over the sound quality, repertory, and style of his performances. His meticulously cultivated vocal and guitar styles, high tenor range, and his studied delivery of poetic text attracted adoring audiences across North America and Europe. This recording, released on the Dyer-Bennet label in 1957, presents Dyer-Bennet's interpretive minstrelsy in an eclectic program, including songs from England, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden Germany, Australia, and the US.

 Saxophonist and clarinetist John Surman is often characterized as a quintessentially English improviser and composer, and hints of folk music and a pastoral ambience are attributes of his music on well-loved albums like The Road to 
Saint Ives or Saltash Bells. Yet he also has a long history of working with musicians from other countries and cultures, players united by such invisible threads as a shared feeling for melody that transcends the idioms. John Surman 
met pianist Nelson Ayres  known to aficionados of Brazilian jazz for his work with Airto Moreira, Milton Nascimento and Banda Pau Brasil  while on tour in South America. In Oslo, Surman came to know and appreciate the playing of 
Rob Waring, expatriate US vibraphonist (recently heard on ECM with Mats Eilertsen). The three musicians come together to play a new program of Surman originals  plus Nelson Ayress Summer Song  in a session recorded at Oslos 
Rainbow studio in July 2017, produced by Manfred Eicher.

Song for Patty is folk singer Sammy Walker's first album. Recorded when he was just twenty two, the album concentrates on characters at odds with the world around them, from (famous heiress and outlaw) Patty Hearst to Johnny Strozier (who was given a 40 year prison sentence after the unarmed robbery of a Georgia store). Featuring contemporaries Sis Cunningham and Phil Ochs (who also produced the album), Song for Patty features ten original tracks, Ochs' Bound for Glory and Woody Guthrie's I Ain't Got No Home. Liner notes include lyrics, sheet music, photos and illustrations of Walker and his subjects, and a brief biography.
